Sacred Buddhist Mountain Tour 6 days

Yungang Grottoes, one of the three major cave clusters in China; Mt. Wutaishan, renowned as one of the four sacred Buddhist Mountains, both are must see while you are in China. Furthermore, there are many more attractions are worth visiting, including Hanging Monastery, Wooden Pagoda and so on.

Itinerary

Day 1 Datong Arrival
Greetings and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the time is at your disposal.

Day 2: Datong (B+L)
Sightseeing: Yungang Grottoes / Hua Yan Monastery / Nine-dragon Screens
You will spend the day touring around the city, including visits to the famous Yungang Grottoes, antique Hua Yan Monastery as well as the Nine-dragon Screens. Yungang Grottoes is one of the largest grotto-groups in China. There are now 53 grottoes with 51000 statues remaining. Nine-dragon Screens is the largest and earliest one of the three famous Nine-dragon Screens in China.

Day 3: Datong –Wutaishan by private van (B+L)
Sightseeing: Hanging Monastery / Wooden Pagoda

Get up early in the morning and drive about 298km to Wutaishan. On the way to Mt. Wutaishan, visit Hanging Monastery. Since it hangs on the west cliff of Jinxia Gorge more than 50 meters above the ground, it is called Hanging Monastery. Built in 491, Hanging Monastery is an architectural wonder. Afterwards, visit Wooden Pagoda, which is the oldest and highest wooden structure in China. It is regarded as the 'First Pagoda in the World' and a gem in the architectural field.

Day 4: Wutaishan – Taiyuan by private van (B+L)
Sightseeing: Mt. Wutaishan
You spend the day visiting the famous Mt. Wutaishan. It is as famous as Mt. Emeishan in Sichuan Province, Mt. Putuoshan in Zhejiang Province, and Mt. Jiuhuashan in Anhui Province, all of which are renowned as the four sacred Buddhist Mountains. 360 temples were built here dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907) but now only 47 of them exist. Today you will visit some of them, including Xiantong Temple, Tayuan Temple and so on. In the late afternoon, you will drive to Taiyuan.

Day 5: Taiyuan – Pingyao by private van (B+L)
Sightseeing: Jinci Temple / Qiao's Compound / Pingyao Ancient Town

Today you will experience the Jinci Temple, which is a combination of historical cultural relics and beautiful landscapes. After lunch, drive to Pingyao and visit Qiao's Compound. Qiao's Compound is marvelous example of the architecture of the Qing dynasty in Taiyuan. The plant occupied 8,724.8 square meters of land, consisting of 6 large yards and 20 small yards with 313 houses in total. Then you continue to visit Pingyao Ancient Town, which is the most well-preserved wall among the ancient historical and cultural cities in China. 

Day 6 Pingyao – Next Destination (B+L)
Sightseeing: Pingyao City Wall / Rishengchang Draft Bank / Ancient Ming and Qing Streets
You will start the day with a visit to Pingyao City Wall, one of the four wholly-protected ancient cities in China. With a total length of six kilometers, the city wall is about 12 meters tall and 3 to 6 meters wide on top. Afterwards, visit the Rishengchang Draft Bank, one of the earliest exchange shops in China. After lunch, you will stroll along the Ancient Ming and Qing Streets.
All the shops along both sides of the street were all built with bricks and stones completely in the style of Ming and Qing architecture, which are all the prototypes of the ancient buildings and quite different from the imitation works now. In the late afternoon, you will take train to next destination.
