HT09 - Sichuan heritage tour 9 days
Day 01: Arrival in Chengdu
Welcome to Chengdu! Chengdu is famous for its three unique characteristics, which are "Heavenly Scenery," "Bashu Culture," (one title of Sichuan) and "Hometown of Pandas".
Upon arrival in Chengdu, you will be met by your tour guide and taken to your hotel.
The remainder of the day is for your free time to explore the city.
Day 02: Chengdu – Songpan (B+L)
Get up early and drive from Chengdu to Songpan. It is one of the 13 counties of the Aba Tibetan Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of northwestern Sichuan province. On the way, you will enjoy the mighty Minjiang river valley.
Day 03: Songpan – Huanglong (B+L)
After breakfast, you will drive to Huanglong, which is famed for its colorful pools, snow-capped mountains, deep forests, waterfalls and colorful cultures. In addition, the area is also home to many endangered animals, including the giant panda and the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey. The main attraction of the valley is the 3.6-kilometer-long and 30 to 70-meter-wide pale yellow calcareous deposits. Huanglong valley was denominated a special scenic spot of China in 1982 and entered "The Natural Legacy Lists of the World" in 1992.
Day 04: Huanglong - Jiuzhaigou (B+L)
Today, you will take full day tour to Jiuzhaigou Valley. It becomes a well known scenic area and a natural reserve for wild animals and plants in China. The mountains, lakes, grass, forests, animals and birds here are all keeping their simple primitiveness without a single trace of artificiality. Jiuzhaigou Valley contains the largest variety of sites and is typically visited first, such as Five-Coloured Lake, Five Flower Sea, The Changhai Sea, Swan Lake, Panda Lake, Nuorilang Lakes, etc. In 1992, UNESCO entered this scenic area onto the world natural heritage list.
Day 05: Jiuzhaigou - Chengdu (B+L)
You will all meet at the lobby of the hotel in the early morning and drive back to Chengdu. On the way, visit the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, which was listed as one of the World's Cultural Heritage by the United Nations Heritage Commission in 2000. It is one of the oldest and greatest irrigation systems in the world and still plays a significant role in agriculture today.
Day 06: Chengdu (B+L)
In the morning we will all gather in the lobby of the hotel and drive about 10 km to the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Institute.
The Giant Panda Breeding Research Institute is an excellent recreational area and a highlight of any visit to Chengdu.
Many endangered species such as giant pandas, red pandas, and black-necked cranes can be seen at the Research Base.
For lunch we'll sample some delicious fare at a local restaurant.
Following lunch, you will head to the Thatched Cottage of Du Fu (Dufu caotang). To honor Dufu, one of China's most famous poets, people established gardens and temples from the Northern Song Dynasty (960 - 1127), covering an area of 16 hectares, the exhibits are a brief account of Dufu's life complete with some of his original calligraphy, wood carvings, couplets and many of Du Fu's finest works complete with foreign translations.
You can also visit Wang Jiang Lou Park, a historic site in memory of Xuetao, a female poet of the Tang Dynasty. The park has been designated a protected Monument in the national province since June 2006.
Day 07: Chengdu - Leshan - Emei City (B+L)
In the morning we will all gather in the lobby of the hotel and drive about 160km to Leshan. Here you will gaze upon the Leshan Giant Buddha, the largest sculpture of Buddha in the world, standing 71 meters tall. The Leshan Giant Buddha depicts a seated Maitreya Buddha with his hands resting on his knees. His shoulders are twenty-eight meters wide and his smallest toenail is large enough to accommodate a seated person.
Following the tour of the Leshan Giant Buddha, you will continue on to Emei City.
Day 08: Mount Emei - Chengdu (B+L)
You will begin the day with a visit to Mount Emei, one of the four sacred places for Buddhists in China. Upon arrival at the parking lot, you will ride the cable car to the top of the mountain. You will experience the Baoguo Temple, the Wannian Temple and other natural scenic temples dispersed over the mountain. Standing on the top of the mountain, you will have a breathtaking panoramic view of the snowy mountains in the west and the vast plain in the east. The Mount Emei Scenic Area, including the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
Following lunch, you will take the cable car down the mountain and drive back to Chengdu city.
Day 09: Chengdu – TBA (B)
The morning is for your leisure before you head to the airport and board your flight back home.
