The Spirit Way (Shen Dao)
The way is guarded on both sides with stone statues by which the ancient emperors wanted to hold a memorial ceremony for the ancestors. It is 7 kilometers long, the longest of China's royal tombs, with an impressive marble archway as well as the entrance to the Ming Tombs. It was thought to have lead the emperors' souls to enter heaven. Along the path are bizarre, mythical stone monsters standing guard. There are 12 pairs of animals, including elephants, lions, mythological beasts, and six pairs of court and military officials. But as the later tombs were built either to the right or to the left, it became the main road to all of them.
