Butterfly Spring

Travel some 27 kilometers south of Dali and you will come to a popular beauty spot known locally as the 'Butterfly Spring'. The Butterfly Spring is situated at the foot of Yunnong Peak in the Cangshan Mountains. The water here is crystal clear and the place where the spring bubbles up attracts people with its tranquility. The pool is some 50 square meters overall and above it is an ancient leaning tree. This is the famous 'Butterfly Tree', so called because during the short interval when spring turns to summer, its fragrant blossom attracts thousands of butterflies. These small multi-colored creatures fly around the pool and settle on the tree in great clusters as they sip the nectar from its blooms. Some of them, black and white in colour, can be as large as the palm of a hand. Some of them are in the size of a coin, having a bright golden colour. Some others are silvery, pink or light green. They are sometimes linked in the shape of a rainbow; sometimes they fly in pairs or clusters. The most marvellous thing is that they would sometimes join together one with another and form a long coloured string hanging from the tree branches right over the surface of the water. It really is a spectacle worth seeing. In recent years, new structures have been built, such as the Butterfly Tower, the Hexagonal pavilion, the Octagonal Pavilion, the Crescent Pool and the Tower Overlooking the Lake. On the 15th day of the fourth moon every year when the traditional Butterfly Festival is due, people pour into Dali for tours or private relaxation.
