Id Kah Mosque

Built in 1442, the Id Kah Mosque is the main historic sight in Kashgar and dominates the central square, which is a stark contrast to the many Chinese-style mosques in Xian. First built in1442, Id Kah Mosque was extended to its present shape through several renovation works. It is one of the largest and most active mosques in the country and attracts close to 10,000 worshippers every Friday afternoon and almost double that number during religious festivals. The whole complex occupies 16,800 square meters (about 4 acres) and consists of the courtyard, the Hall of Prayer, and the gate tower as well as some other attached structures. The whole yard is heavily shaded, making you as cool and comfortable as if you were in an air-conditioned environment. The Hall of Prayer is on a high dais in the west end of the mosque. The roof is held up by light blue pillars and all the pillars form a rectangular shape. Around the roof and the pillars are exquisite carvings and beautiful pictures. The brick gate tower faces the Id Kah Square. This tower is full of elaborate flower-pattern carvings, mainly green.
