The Ice Lantern Garden Festival
The Ice Lantern Garden Festival was established in 1963, covers an area of 6.5 hectares and uses about 2,000 cubic metres of ice.
The Ice Lantern Garden Party is an outstanding achievement of the people in Harbin, who exploit and utilize the local resources of ice and snow. Held every winter in Zhaolin Park, the festival shows about 1,500 traditional ice lanterns. It is a unique art exhibition of ice and snow which includes multiple subjects such as gardening, architecture, sculpture, theatrics, Chinese painting, Chinese literature and Chinese music, which results in a great influence both at home and abroad.
Up until now, a total of 33 sessions of the Ice Lantern Garden Party have been successfully held. The sum total of visitors from both home and abroad has been more than 30 million. It has already been listed 7 times in the Guinness World Records and has made an outstanding contribution to the well-known tour city of Harbin.
During the period of the Ice Lantern Garden Party an ice carving competition is held in Zhaolin Park. Craftsmen from more than 10 countries, including America, Japan, Singapore, Canada, and Russia, are invited to join in the competition with enthusiasts from all over China for the purpose of exchanging their craft of ice carving.
