Huangshan Travel Guide

Situated in the southern portion of the agriculturally rich Anhui Province and bordering Jiangxi and Zhejiang Provinces, the picturesque Huang Mountain has long been effusively described as "awesome," "a wonderland" and "Heaven on Earth." Huang Mountain has long been highly appreciated in China. There are lofty peaks, steep valleys, winding streams, charming plants and trees. It is said that if one climbs HuangShan mountains, one will find other mountains nothing but rocks and hills. Originally known as Mt. Yishan it was renamed Mt. Huangshan in 747 AD in recognition of the legendary Huang Di, who was the reputed ancestor of the Chinese people and who made magic pills for immortality here.

Located in the subtropics, Huangshan City has a wet mild monsoon climate. Heaviest rainfall occurs from May to August; average annual temperature ranges from 15 C (59 F)-16 C (60.8 F). Most areas are free of severe winter cold. The comfortable weather affords good opportunities to travel throughout the year in Huangshan City and its stunning environs.

Eat

Stewed Soft-shelled Turtle in Clear Soup
Also known as Ham and Turtle soup, this dish is one of the oldest traditional dishes in Anhui Province. It uses soft-shelled turtles from the mountainous areas near Huangshan. The dish's main ingredients consist of an entire soft shelled turtle, ham, bamboo shoots, garlic, ginger, black pepper and salt. The ingredients are all stewed together over a charcoal fire. This traditional Hui Cuisine dish is famous throughout China.

Mandarin Perch
Mandarin Perch live in the Xinan River that flows through Huangshan City. The ideal time to eat this dish is when the peach blossoms bloom. It is at this time when the small river shrimp hatch, and become the Mandarin Perch's main food source. The shrimp change the taste of the fish's meat making it much more delicious than it normally is. It is said that the Mandarin Perch can help lower cholesterol.

Laba Tofu (Bean Curd)
Laba refers to a traditional Chinese festival which comes on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. This day is often the coldest day of the year, and the tofu is round and gold in color and reminds people of the sun. Tofu is cut into circles with a small hole in the center. Some salt is put into the hole, and the tofu is left to dry in the winter sun. The salt is slowly absorbed into the tofu. The finished Laba Tofu is smooth as jade and golden in color and tastes savory and salty. Laba Tofu can be fried and eaten plain, or stir-fried with meat.

Getting There

By air
Huangshan Airport (TXN) is in west Tunxi District, 5 kilometers (about 3.1 miles) from the downtown area with flights to Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hefei, Tianjing, Haikou, Shenzhen, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Xian, Guilin, Kunming, Xiamen, Zhuhai, Macau, etc. There is no international flight from Huangshan City.

By train
Wan-gan railway line (from Anhui Province to Jiangxi Province) runs through Huangshan City. Many trains run directly to Beijing (about 19 hour's journey), Shanghai (eleven or twelve hour's journey), Guangzhou (about 19 hour's journey), Nanjing (five to eight hour's journey), Hefei, Jingdezhen, Nanchang (eight or nine hour's journey), Xiamen (about 23 hour's journey) and Fuzhou (14 or 15 hour's journey). If you visit southern China first, you can transfer at Hangzhou. If you come to Huangshan City from northern China, Nanjing is your best transfer stop.

Yilin Ge Tea House
A cultural site with simple and elegant art style offers the cultural performances of tea ceremony, Huangmei Opera (popular in Anhui Province) and Hui Opera which are always performing to the delight of visitors.

This tea house serves some of the best tea grades in Anhui Province. It is reputed to be one of the largest and the best tea houses in Anhui Province.

Huangshan Tianzhu Tea House
To make your visit as memorable as possible the city can boast of many tea houses. There are also KTVs, discos, internet bars, cafes and bars to make you enjoy the city.

Huangshan Pinwei (tasting) Bar
This bar offers western wine, cocktails, coffee, compote, snacks and beer to delight visitors.

Events
Huangshan International Tourism Festival
Huangshan International Tourism Festival is usually held in October or November. Tourists can appreciate the folk-custom performances in the Opening Ceremony and many exhibitions of handcrafts, paintings and calligraphies. The evening parties are also amazing.
