Jiuzhaigou Travel Guide
Situated in the depths of the mountains in the border area of Nanping, Songpan and Pingwu counties in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of northwestern Sichuan, is a fairyland called Jiuzhaigou – Nine-Village Valley, which is the home of nine Tibetan villages. The valley is 50 kilometers in length. It is a national park and has also been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. The name Jiuzhaigou refers to the 9 Tibetan villages that are situated in the valley. The valley has a variety of natural scenery - lakes, waterfalls, snowy mountains and lush green forests. There are also more than 100 lakes of various sizes and shapes that sparkle with color in the flickering sunlight.
Butter tea
Its main ingredients are butter and milk as well as walnut kernel, peanut and sesame, egg and salt, being stirred in a barrel, then mixed with boiled tea and red coloring matter. After being stirred for a few seconds, a fragrant barrel of buttered tea is ready. It is poured into a big kettle and kept warm on a stove for drinking.
Yacha tea
Selected from large tealeaves, it is produced in Yan Prefecture. Tibetans eat frequent meals but few vegetables or fruits and Yan tea offers a type of vitamin supplement and is also an ingredient that is added to buttered tea for a strong and authentic flavor.
Qingke barley liquor
Served as a treat on important occasions and for guests. To make this liquor, barley is washed and steamed, and then fermented for a couple of days. When it appears yellowish and tastes sweet, it is ready to drink. It is also called Tibetan beer.
Flour sliced with picked cabbage
A traditional Tibetan food. Pickled-cabbage soup is cooked and then mixed with flour slices and bacon chops or fresh yak meat slices, potato slices, as well as shallot and salt.
Blood sausage
Offered to honor distinguished guests. This nutritious and tasty food is made of blood, spices, yak meat or pork, all wrapped in an intestine like a Western sausage.
Yak meat
Preserved in sauce and other ingredients, it is cut into slices and prepared as a salad with hot pepper powder. Goes well with liquor. There is a factory in Jiuzhaigou that produces and vacuum-packs fast-food yak meat for your convenience to buy as a gift.
Buckwheat noodle
Buckwheat flour can be made into steamed bread and noodles that are good for your health and taste delicious. A bowl of buckwheat noodles served with a cold dish is typical Tibetan cuisine.
Jiuhuang (Jiuzhaigou-Huanglong) Airport is 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) away to the north of Chuanzhusi Town, which is located in Songbo County of the Aba Autonomous Prefecture. Opened in 2003 Jiuzhaigou-Huanglong Airport is the first airport in Aba Zhou, bringing great convenience to travelers and a chance for economic development for the local tourist industry. Travelers from Chengdu, Kunming and Chongqing can reach Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong directly.
Tibetian Cultural Show is held at the Jarpo Grand Theatre of Jiuzhai Paradise. It was a nice cultural show entitled Dreamland Journey with all the actress and actors who are the descendants of Tibet. These handsome guys and beautiful ladies perform a 90 minutes musical. It is worth watching if you have nothing to do at night in Jiuzhaigou.
The 4th Jiuzhaigou Folk Festival will be held on March 15 in Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve, a World Heritage site in southwestern China's Sichuan Province.
The festival will showcase local folk customs. The program will feature acts such as folk songs and dances from local Tibetan and Qiang ethnic minority groups, a "four seasons" photo exhibition and other Jiuzhaigou customs.
The activity was organized by the local government, the Scenic and Historic Area Administration Bureau of Jiuzhaigou and the Tourism Group of Jiuzhaigou. It coincides with Consumer Rights and Interests Day.
