Changlai Miao Village

Changlai Miao Village, on the Bei River bank and 10 kilometers from the county seat, features Miao dance and reed-pipe tunes. The villagers always entertain their guests with unique local foods. An important one is serving a soup which comes in two varieties-salty and sweet. This soup is made of dried, steamed glutinous rice, fried soya beans, peanuts, sesame and condiments. Glutinous rice is the staple food on the dining table of the Miao. Fish, meat, and bamboo shoots cooked in a soy sauce, and mushroom soup, along with rice, make up the traditional Miao cuisine offered to guests. There will definitely be wine too - the Miao’s self-brewed wine, with a low alcohol content. Gusts are expected to drink the wine every time a toast is presented to them. To refuse results in disciplinary action-the hosts will pull the guest’s ears and force the wine down. By the third cup, however, both the guests and the hosts are pulling each other’s ears. The way the Miao see off their guests is even more fascinating. All the way to the village gate, guests are serenaded with lusheng music and send-off songs; then the girls gently step on the guests’ feet. This action is the special way by which young Miao men and women express their love, but here it indicates their hospitality.
