Shaolin Temple
in the region of Song Mountain, Dengfeng City, Henan Province, is reputed to be 'the Number One Temple under Heaven'. The monastery was built by the Emporer Hsiao-Wen in 496 CE, and the first abbot of Shaolin was Batuo, also known as Bhadra, an Indian dhyana master who came to China in CE 464 to spread Buddhist teachings.
Shaolin Temple is the cradle of the Chinese Zen Buddhism. It embraces many exciting attractions, such as the Hall of Heavenly Kings (Tianwangdian), the Mahavira Hall (Daxiongbaodian), the Pagoda Forest, the Dharma Cave and the Shaolin Temple Martial Art Training Center. Shaolin Temple is probably the most famous temple in China, not only because of its long history and its role in Chinese Buddhism, but also because of its martial arts or Chan Buddhism. Shaolin does have a long tradition of Chinese martial arts, as the saying goes 'All martial arts (gongfu) are from Shaolin.'
