Garden of the Master of the Nets
First designed during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279), the Garden of the Master of the Nets is situated in the southern part of Suzhou. Covering 5,400 sq. meters, it is the smallest of the Suzhou residential gardens, yet it is the most impressive because of its use of space, which creates the illusion of an area that is much greater than its actual size. The Garden of the Master of the Nets is one out of four famed Suzhou gardens, and is representative of their artistic characteristics and cultural values.
The Garden of the Master of the Nets is divided into three sections: a residential section, the central main garden and an inner garden. Today the garden has 22 buildings, 2 doors with richly carved earthen ornamentation,15 plateaux, 9 parallel couplets,15 brick and stone carvings, 32 stelae, and 8 rare species of old trees, namely Sabina chinensis, Pinus bungeana, etc.
This garden is reputed to be the best preserved garden in Suzhou and should not be missed. It is small in size, but is like a beautifully cut diamond whose beauty is of never ending fascination and pleasure.
