Humble Administrator's Garden

The Humble Administrator's Garden was originally built in 1509 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It was initially a private garden of a former government servant named Wang Xianchen. Covering about 52,000 sq. meters (12.85 acres), the Humble Administrator's Garden is the largest of all classical gardens and the most renowned. One can hardly imagine the charm of the classical Chinese gardens without having experienced the Humble Administrator's Garden – truly a paradise for mind and soul, in which one can find romantic beauty, relaxation and inner peace. The Humble Administrator's Garden consists of Eastern, Central and Western sections as well as some residences of the former owners. It is centered upon the broad expanse of a lake, making up about one fifth of the total area. With well spaced buildings, the garden landscape is simple, extensive and natural, possessing the traditional appearances of the Ming Dynasty. Its gardening art occupies a very significant position in Chinese gardening history and the garden represents the historical characteristics and achievements of Jiangnan private gardens.
