Tiger Hill
Having a history that can be traced back over 2500 years, Tiger Hill (Hu Qiu) is the most famous sight of Suzhou, with old trees and cultural relics everywhere-- the Sword Testing Stone, the Broken Beam Hall, the Thousand Men Rock, the Sword Pond, etc.
Tiger Hill is 36 meters high and is set in a 20-hectare park. Near the top of the hill is the burial place of the founding father of Suzhou, King He Lu, who died in 600 B.C. It was said that a white tiger occasionally appeared to guard the tomb; hence the name for the hill.
At the foot of the hill there is a sword pond, 5 meters deep. King He Lu was a zealous collector of rare swords and it is said that he tested them upon the stone, leaving the crevice on the rock. As for his swords, it is believed that they were buried beneath the sword pond as funerary objects. Another landmark on Tiger Hill is the thousand year-old Yunyan Pagoda, also known as the Leaning Tower, which stands on top of the hill and is regarded as the symbol of Suzhou. The pagoda was first built in 959 and is octagonal in shape. Its architectural style is similar to that of the Leifeng Pagoda in Hangzhou. In history, it has been ravaged by fire seven times which resulted in the destruction of the dome and the wooden eaves on the exterior, leaving intact only the brick-built body.
