Zhouzhuang

Zhouzhuang, known as the "most beautiful water country in China", is an ancient town on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake. It is located in Kunshan City, 30 kilometers southeast of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province. Zhouzhuang is noted for its profound cultural background, the well-preserved ancient residential houses, the elegant watery views and the strong local colored traditions and customs. In an area of half a square kilometer, 60 percent of the structures were built during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The town is surrounded and divided by lakes and rivers. Fourteen stone bridges cross the rivers, showing distinctive views of the water town. The Twin Bridges, which comprise Shide Bridge and Yongan Bridge, are the most famous symbol of the town. Crossing the two crisscross rivers and connecting at the middle, the Twin Bridges look like an old-style Chinese key. With more than one hundred rooms, the Hall of Shen's Residence is one of the most interesting of the private houses in Zhouzhuang. The whole architectural complex is of the Qing style and occupies an area of more than 2,000 square meters (half an acre). In the visit to Shen House, tourists can see the Qing style complex, which consists of several buildings connected through arcades, aisles and courtyards. Some of the points of interest in the Shen House are the water gate and the wharf, the gate tower, the tearoom, the main hall; and the Xiaotang Tower and Back Hall, where cultural relics are exhibited.
