Kunming Travel Guide

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, is one of the nation's 24 historic and cultural cities in China. It was named Kunming in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and has since become the political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan Province. Kunming covers 15,561 square kilometers and has a total population of 3.749 million. The annual temperature averages 14.5 degrees centigrade. The temperature averages 19.7 degrees centigrade in the hottest month, and 7.5 degrees centigrade in the coldest month. Kunming is the focal point of Yunnan minority culture. Some 26 ethnic minorities such as Yi, Bai, Miao, Dai, Hani and more inhabit the region. Kunming is a beautiful city rich in lakes, hills, stones, caves, springs, waterfalls, flowers, ancient trees, gardens, and well known for cultural relics and ethnic customs. The famous are Stone Forest, Green Lake Park and Bamboo Temple. It has become one of China's ten major tourist attractions.

Kunming enjoys a pleasant climate with little change in temperature throughout the year. The temperature averages about 15 degrees C. in the urban area, 19.7 degrees C. peaks in the summer and 7.5 degrees C. troughs in the winter.
The rainy season is between May and Oct when 85% of the annual rainfall of 1000mm falls. Due to Kunming's moderate humidity and temperature, as well as the plentiful sunshine the city receives, Kunming is known as the "Spring City" and is green throughout the year.

Steaming-Pot Chicken (Qiguo Ji)
This dish gained its name from steaming the chicken in a pot with a hollow tube in the center. It is a simple tasty dish. To make it, place chicken, ginger, a shallot, pepper and salt in the pot and steam for about four hours, during which time steam from the tube contacts the cold pot cover turning to water, then flows back into the pot to become delicious chicken soup. Before serving, remove ginger and shallot.

Kunming Bittern Duck (Kunming Lu Ya)
The dish is a first choice among tourists. After choosing ducks from Dianchi Lake and preparing with some ten steps, it can be served. The dish is golden with a soft flavor. It is said that Bittern Duck is a dish do much good to people's health.
A recommended restaurant for the dishes mentioned is Fuzhao Lou located at Meishicheng crossing near South Gate, prices about 50 yuan per person. Another famous Dian restaurant is Lao Fangzi (old house). It is located at No. 18 - 19 in Jixiang Xiang, Dongfeng Xi Lu. The charming restaurant is a typical Yunnan residence with a 100-year history.

Crossing the Bridge Rice Noodle (Yunnan Guoqiao Mixian) is a popular specialty of Kunming and Yunnan. It has three main parts: a bowl of extremely hot chicken broth, slices of various meats including chicken, fish, served with various seasonings and rice noodles.
The most authentic and tasty Crossing the Bridge Rice Noodles are served at Qiao Xiang Yuan (Culture Street location) at 2 Wenlin Jie, Jinma Biji Square.

Getting There

By air
Kunming is one of the five major international airports in China. It operates 7 provincial routes and more than 40 domestic and international routes. Passengers can fly from Kunming to many major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. They can also fly to Hong Kong, Rangoon, Bangkok, ChiangMai, Vientiane, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

By train
The railways linking Kunming constitute the southwest part of the nation's network. With Kunming at the center, there are five major lines:
Guiyang-Kunming railway: an electrified railway linking Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province to Kunming
Chengdu-Kunming railway: linking Chengdu, capital of Sichan to Kunming
Nanning-Kunming railway: an electrified rail line linking Nanning, capital of Guangxi Province, to Kunming; also the nearest line to the seaport
Guangtong-Dali railway: linking Guangtong, on the Chengdu-Kunming line, with Dali
Kunming-Hekou railway: a narrow-gauge railway linking Kunming to Hekou

Nightlife

Cafe de Camel
Camel Bar started as a bar for local rock and roll bands to meet, perform, listen to music and drink. Our tastes have got more varied, but it's still all about the music. We now play a vast selection of rock and roll, hip hop, house, soul, funk, punk, blues and ska. Check the website for announcements of special events, including parties, frequent gigs from local and out of town bands, as well as guest DJ's. If you've got the skills, bring you're instruments any time for an impromptu jam - usually a few characters up for it.

French Café, Lan Bai Hong
The French Cafe is located in the university district. The owners, a French couple, make delicious french and chinese fodd. Chocolate cakes, fruit tarts as well as French wine are available there. There is also a free internet connection and the ADSL is available as well.

Xuanwei Ham (Xuanwei Huotui)
Xuanwei Ham (Xuanwei Huotui) also called 'Yuntui' or 'Yunnan Ham' is one of the three famous and best hams in China. The main ingredient in many local dishes, Yunnan Ham retains its unique flavor and can be stored for long periods of time. Offered in most local restaurants, ham preparation includes baking, salting, pestle, warming, and freezing.

Modern Cake (Modeng Baba)
Baba is popular in Yunnan. It is a food made of flour, corn powder, sticky rice, lard, sesame and meat. The initiators of Modern Baba were two pretty sisters who made sweet and tasteful Baba that attracts people even today. Modern Baba has a crisp exterior and a soft interior; it is sweet with savory cream.

Kunming International Tourism Festival
Firstly held in 2000, the China Kunming International Tourism Festival, co-sponsored by the National Tourism Administration of China and the Provincial Government of Yunnan is one of the activities of "New Millennium China Tours" launched by the National Tourism Administration. As reported during the Festival period from April 10 to May 10, Kunming, as a main theater, will hold the first Yunnan Gourmet Festival, the International Jade & Jadeite Fair, Bangkok-Kunming Auto-Relay, performance of excellent plays or operas featuring the ethnic groups in Yunnan and so on. Meanwhile, the branches in prefectures and counties will also hold rich and colorful activities like the Water-splashing Festival of Dai nationality, the Song Gathering of Wa Nationality, Flower Shows of Nu, and the "Fair of San Yue Jie" in the city of Dali, etc.

China Kunming Import & Export Commodities Fair
