Lanzhou Travel Guide

Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, is in the north-central China. Situated on the upper Yellow River, it became part of the territory of Qin in the 6th century BC and later developed as a major trade centre on the Silk Road. It used to connect the central China and the western region. Covering an area of 1631.6 square kilometers (629.96 square miles), Lanzhou is home to a population of 3.14 million, including Han, Hui, Bao'an, Dongxiang, Tibetan, Yugu and Sala and more. A rapidly growing industrial city, it receives its power from a nearby hydroelectric facility and from the coal that is mined in the area. It has one of the largest oil refineries in the country, in addition to textile mills, petrochemical, rubber, and fertilizer plants, and machine manufactures. Prime tourist attractions include the Five-Spring and White Pagoda parks, renowned for their picturesque landscape and unique architecture, were built around the hills on both banks of the Yellow River that squeezes its way through the city. The view from their tops sweeps over the whole city and down the Yellow River.

Located inland, Lanzhou is a typical temperate, semi-arid continental monsoon climate. It is dry with sufficient sunshine. The best season may be from May to October when the temperature is most suitable.

Lanzhou Beef Noodle
Lanzhou Beef Noodle (Stretched Noodles) is the most famous local dish in Lanzhou. It was first created during the reign of Emperor Guangxu (1875 - 1908) in the Qing Dynasty (1616 - 1911) and it is now popular all over China. This dish has five main features: clear soup, white radish, red pepper, green caraway, and yellow noodles. The noodles can be wide or slim to meet different preferences. 

Niangpizi
Niangpizi cannot be missed among the local delicacies. Flour paste is steamed for 3 - 4 minutes, then cut into strips and served with mustard, garlic, sesame butter, chili oil, vinegar, and soy sauce. This is a favorite among the locals and many of the tourists.

Baisui (longevity) Chicken
It used to be called the “Pinyuan Chicken” or the “First Scholar’s Chicken”. Wang xiye, the owner and founder of the featured roast chicken established the fame in 1985 and named it “Longevity Chicken”, with the meaning of “living a long life after eating the chicken”. The chicken is roasted on fire until its skin is crisp and its bone is soft. The chicken flesh is delicate and tender, with its aroma flowing to every corner of the room. By now, the restaurant has opened 5 multiple stores and its chicken can be done in more than ten methods, of which hot pot chicken is the most delicious. Diners sometimes have to book the seat three to four hours in advance to get a decent seat.

Getting There

By air
Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (ZGC) is located about 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) from the downtown area. More than 30 airlines connect Lanzhou to the outside world, with daily flights to and from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xi'an. The direct daily flights to and from Lhasa now is available and the whole flight lasts only 3.5 hours. Flights to major cities like Tianjin,Chengdu, Chongqing, Nanjing, Kunming, Hangzhou, Taiyuan, Jinan, Changsha, Haikou, Wuhan, Wenzhou, Xiamen, Zhuhai, Shenyang and international and regional flights to Okinawa, Singapore, and Hong Kong are also available from Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport.

By train
Lanzhou Railway Station is located in the south downtown. There are altogether 45 daily rail departures from Lanzhou, connecting Lanzhou to other cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Qingdao, Jinan, Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou, Guangzhou, Changsha, Wuhan, Chengdu, Xian, Xining, Urumqi and Hohhot. Express trains also run to Xining, Yumen, Zhangye, Pingliang and Golmud.

Nightlife

Baroque Xinzhen Bar
This splendidly decorated bar is a pearl among the numerous bars in Lanzhou. Undoubtedly, this is the most novel bar in the city.

Huochai Tiantang (Match Paradise) Bar
The name Match Paradise, is derived from a famous fairy tale by Anderson as well as a pop song in China. Simplicity is the key here but demonstrated in such a way that each patron departs with a sense of being positively impacted.

Shi Er Ma (Twelve Yards) Bar
Another theme bar, focusing on football, which is the most fashionable venue for football fans.

Night Market
Delicacies of various ethnic groups such as Han, Hui, Bao'an, Dongxiang, Uigu, as well as from communities in and around Lanzhou like Jingyuan, Xian, Xinjiang, will stimulate your appetite. Sample the preserved pork, boiled mutton, barbequed mutton, pork pies, and rice noodles. The night market near Zhongshan Bridge focuses on Muslim food and is one of the most popular of its kind in Lanzhou. 

Events
Hua'er Folk Music Festival
Hua'er Folk Music Festival at Lanhua Mountain, Linxia County is held from the 1st to 6th of the 6th moon every year. Hua'er is a type of folk music. At the Hua'er Festival, Hua'er singers come from the neighboring areas and bring their talent into full play, singing impromptu song after song. This festival is of such importance that all the counties offer tour buses to the Hua'er performances.
