Yichang Travel Guide

Yichang, a major city of Hubei Province, is located at Longitude 110'15' E to 112'04' E, Latitude29'56' N to 31'34' N. Yichang is where the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River are divided. Yichang has been defined as a distributing center, an important trading port and a transportation hub along the Yangtze river linking west Hubei and east Sichuan since ancient times. Yichang lies between the middle subtropical zone and northern subtropical zone. The climatic feature of this region is that the four seasons are clearly demarcated. In Yichang there are large quantities of rare animals, birds such as Chinese sturgeon, south China tiger, snub-nosed monkey, musk deer, golden monkey and some other state protection kinds. Altogether,there are 363 kinds of land vertebrate in Yichang.
Climate
Yichang lies between the middle subtropical zone and northern subtropical zone. The climatic feature of this region is that the four seasons are clearly demarcated. Spring and autumn are longer than summer and winter. It's hot in summer and there's much rain, while it's cold in winter and there's little rain. The average temperature in autumn is higher than that in spring. In summer there are rich storms. The rainy season is June and July, which is also the hottest period. Yichang enjoys four clear seasons with cloudy and sunny springs, hot and humid summers, fine and pleasant autumns and dry winters.

Eat

Liangxia (cold shrimp)
Liangxia (cold shrimp), which gets its name from its shape, is made of rice, corn and brown sugar. It tastes cool and is even better after mixing some ice water in it.

Three Gorges Pearl Soup
The Three Gorges pearl soup is made according to the thought of the grand view of the Xiling Gorge. The white egg is made in shape of the mountains and floats on the chicken soup. There are also fish balls of three colors which represent the pearl float between the mountains. It is really a beautiful picture which will please your eye very much and also tasty to the mouth. The fish is tender inside and the soup is fat but not greasy. It has been listed as one of the famous dishes of Hubei style cuisine.

Getting There

By air
Yichang has air services an average of three times a week from Beijing, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Enshi, Guangzhou, Huangshan (daily), Kunming, Nanjing, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xi'an, Zhangiiajie and Zhengzhou.

By train
There are direct trains from various cities, including Wuhan, Xi'an, and Bejing, but many services require a change at the nearby junction of Yaqueling. From Wuhan Long-distance buses and overnight sleeper buses may be more convenient.

Nightlife
Yichang has its bustling and colorful daily life. After dark, the nightlife of Yichang begins. Like most cities in China, at the end of the working day people jostle with each other in bars, discos, KTV (karaoke) and other places of entertainment. Dragon Boat Racing
Yichang's Dragon Boat Races are world famous. Every year the city of Yichang hosts the International Dragon Boat Rally which invites teams from all over the world to compete in traditional Dragon Boat races. According to legend the race started in the Warring States Period (476-221 BC). When the patriot QuYuan threw himself into the river to drown himself local people raced out onto the water with their boats to attempt to rescue him. In modern competitions the dragon boats are usually around 20 meters long and 1 meter wide. Each team will have a drummer, a gong beater, a coxswain, and oarsmen. The oarsmen will row and keep stroke following the rhythm of the drum and gong. Dragon Boat Races are one of the most exciting sports you'll ever see in China. With their crews straining at their paddles, these 20 meter craft can slice through the water at incredible speeds.
