ChongqingChongqing, the largest municipal area and population in China, is a port city situated in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers in southwest China. Qutang GorgeQutang Gorge, about 5 miles long (8 km), is the shortest, but the most perilous with torrential water roaring down from high cliffs. The narrowest part is less than 100 meters and the gorge's widest point is only 150 meters. Mists frequently swirl around the mysterious limestone peaks, some nearly 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) high, and the river rushes swift as an arrow through the narrow entrance, pounding the perpendicular cliff faces on either side of the gorge. ShibaozhaiIf literally translated into English, Shibaozai is called as Stone Treasure Fortress. Shibaozai is a large wooden temple/pagoda built into the side of a natural cliff, standing on the riverside. It was first built in Qing Dynasty in 1750. Located at the south bank of the Yangtze River, Shibaozai is 52 km away from Wanxian. Shibaozhai is simply a rectangular rock with sheer cliffs, a red wooden pagoda, 12 stories high, 160 meters above the river, and was built against the rock wall standing on the riverside. Visitors can climb to the top by spiral staircase in the pagoda and gain a panoramic view of the winding river, the village and the countryside. Top

Wu GorgeWu Gorge is the most beautiful section of the Yangtze River, charactering by beautiful peaks and steep cliffs on either side. Wu Gorge (Wuxia Gorge) is forty five kilometers long, extending from the mouth of the DaningRiver in the west to Guandukou in BadongCounty, with HubeiProvince in the east. The steep slopes of the gorge are green with trees and bushes. The whirlpools, quicksand, and currents that varied from hour to hour make Wu Gorge famous as dangerous place.

The gorge is divided into two main sections, the Golden Helmet and Silver Armour Gorge and the aptly-named Iron Coffin Gorge. Top -
Shennong StreamA stop on the upstream journey from Yichang to Chongqing, the Shennong Stream is one of the last places on the Yangtze River where boatmen still work, sweat trickling down their bare torsos as they tow boats by the netting strung to their backs. Top

Lesser Three GorgesLesser Three gorges is one of the exciting and famous stops in the Yangtze Three Gorges. It is made of Longmen Gorge, Bawu Gorge and Dicui Gorge and is 50 kilometers long. The river is much smaller, narrower and has some dramatic scenery. Lesser Three Gorges is full of steep peaks. Its beauty is even superior to the Three gorges. It was selected as one of the forty top tourist attractions in China in 1991, jointly by the tourists and the China Tourism Commissioner's votes and evaluation. Top

Xiling GorgeXiling Gorge, begins at the Xiangxi stream in the west and ends at NanjinguanPass in the east, is the longest part of the Three Gorges system. It is known for its numerous hidden rocks, dangerous shoals and rocks, dangerous shoals and turbulent rapids. YichangYichang, a major city of HubeiProvince, is located at Longitude 110'15' E to 112'04' E, Latitude29'56' N to 31'34' N. Yichang is where the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River are divided. Yichang has been defined as a distributing center, an important trading port and a transportation hub along the Yangtze river linking west Hubei and east Sichuan since ancient times. Yichang lies between the middle subtropical zone and northern subtropical zone. The climatic feature of this region is that the four seasons are clearly demarcated. In Yichang there are large quantities of rare animals, birds such as Chinese sturgeon, south China tiger, snub-nosed monkey, musk deer, golden monkey and some other state protection kinds. Altogether,there are 363 kinds of land vertebrate in Yichang. Top
